Finland adds nearly 21,000 people in 2025 amid immigration slowdown

Finland’s population grows by nearly 21,000 in 2025 despite significant drop in immigration.

Preliminary figures from Statistics Finland show that Finland’s population increased by 20,929 people in 2025, even though the number of people moving to the country from abroad fell sharply for the second year in a row.

At the end of December 2025, Finland’s population was 5,656,900. Population growth was driven mainly by net migration, with 50,060 people moving to Finland from abroad and 15,208 people leaving the country, resulting in a positive net gain of 34,852 migrants.

Although immigration declined by over 13,000 compared with 2024, the 2025 figure remained historically high, the third largest since 1990. Ukrainian nationals continued to be the largest group of newcomers, followed by people from the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

Births in Finland rose modestly for the first time in several years, with 45,835 children born in 2025, about 2,115 more than in 2024. The total fertility rate increased from 1.25 to 1.30 but remains below replacement level.

Despite the rise in births, there were 59,030 deaths in 2025, exceeding births by 13,195 and highlighting ongoing demographic challenges.

The preliminary data also show small increases in life expectancy and a rise in the number of marriages compared with the previous year.

Statistics Finland plans to publish final official population figures later this year.
