Wolt tightens courier rules in Finland with new one-person account policy from August 2026

Wolt, the Finnish food and goods delivery platform, will implement a new personal account policy for its couriers in Finland starting August 1, 2026.
This change will make each courier account strictly personal, meaning they cannot be shared or used by anyone else for deliveries.
🛡️ Why the New Policy?
The move is driven by several key factors, primarily to combat illegal work and exploitation in the so-called "grey economy".
This includes issues like undocumented workers using rented accounts and the practice of couriers paying "rent" to account owners, sometimes giving up a significant portion of their daily earnings.
The company sees the policy as a step toward a safer, more accountable platform. It also aims to prepare for upcoming legislation on platform work and alcohol delivery in Finland.
The introduction of the new alcohol law, which would allow home delivery of alcoholic beverages, has influenced this decision, as the company wants to ensure a compliant system.
👥 What It Means for Couriers
The new policy on August 1, 2026, will create two distinct scenarios:
· If you use your own account: If you are the only person using your account, you can continue delivering as usual and no action is required.
· If you share your account: If someone else currently uses your account to deliver, you are asked to inform them immediately.
This will allow them to plan ahead and apply for their own account if they wish to continue delivering. You can still use your profile as usual until you receive further updates.
· If you deliver using someone else's account and want to continue: It is recommended that you apply to deliver using your own account by June 1, 2026. After this date, Wolt plans to contact all applicants in your city about the next steps.
⚖️ Broader Context and Enforcement
This change is part of a broader, stricter enforcement effort by Wolt.
The "one account per courier" rule has always existed in its service agreement but will now be monitored through regular account reviews, with any violations leading to account removal.
To ensure compliance, Wolt is also introducing more frequent identity and work permit checks, including facial recognition, and is creating a dedicated internal unit to monitor for abuse.
These measures are also being implemented in response to a Finnish Supreme Administrative Court ruling that couriers should be considered employees, not independent contractors.
This shift represents a major step toward formalizing gig work in Finland. If you are affected by this change, the key deadlines to remember are June 1, 2026 for applying for a new account, and August 1, 2026 when the new personal account policy officially takes effect.
