Finland Approves Citizenship Test for New Citizens

Finland's Parliament has approved a new law that will require people applying for Finnish citizenship to pass a citizenship test.

The new requirement is expected to take effect at the beginning of 2027. Under the law, applicants will need to complete the test in either Finnish or Swedish.

The government says the test is intended to help ensure that new citizens have a basic understanding of Finnish society and its values.

While the exact content of the exam has not yet been announced, it is expected to include questions about Finnish history, culture, human rights, democracy and equality.

The proposal was approved by a large majority in Parliament. Officials will now begin preparing the details of the test before it is introduced in 2027.

The citizenship test is part of a broader set of immigration reforms being introduced by the Finnish government.
