"DIGITAL CHAOS ON FINLAND'S TRANSPORT APPS"

Widespread payment disruptions hit public transport apps across Helsinki, Tampere, Turku, Kuopio, and Oulu
---
July 25, 2026 — Thousands of commuters and tourists across Finland have been left stranded this week as a wave of technical failures struck public transport mobile applications in multiple cities, preventing passengers from purchasing tickets through their smartphones.
The disruptions, which began on Wednesday, July 22, have affected the Helsinki Regional Transport (HSL) app, Tampere’s Nysse Mobiili, Turku’s Föli services, and the Waltti mobile application used in several cities including Kuopio and Oulu.
Helsinki: HSL app payment issues
In the capital region, HSL app users found themselves unable to purchase tickets using any payment method other than debit or credit cards. MobilePay, phone billing, and commuter benefit payments such as Epassi were all blocked.
The fault was first detected around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, with no immediate estimate of when it would be resolved. HSL communications officer Johannes Laitila confirmed that the issue prevented ticket purchases through all but card payments.
“A payment issue affecting the HSL app was identified on the morning of 22 July 2026, and is still ongoing,” the company announced. The disruption was finally resolved on Thursday, July 23. HSL has stated that payment authorisations from failed purchase attempts will be automatically refunded.
Tampere: Nysse ticket purchases blocked
The Tampere region faced similar chaos as the Nysse Mobiili app stopped allowing ticket purchases entirely. While users could still select ticket types and zones, the payment method selection failed, making purchases impossible.
“Nysse Mobiili’s payment option is down, preventing Tampere region users from buying tickets through the app while technicians work on a fix,” Tampere Today reported.
Widespread Waltti app failures
The Waltti mobile application, which serves public transport in multiple Finnish cities, experienced extensive payment problems. Users in Kuopio were unable to purchase bus tickets through the app, with the disruption beginning on Thursday morning. The issues also affected services in Helsinki, Tampere, and Oulu.
Turku: Föli departure monitor down
In Turku, the Föli public transport system reported a separate disruption affecting its stop timetable service (Departure Monitor) on the Föli website, rendering the service unavailable. “We are currently investigating the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” Föli stated on July 2.
Broader context
The travel app failures come amid a wider pattern of digital service disruptions in Finland. Earlier in July, several Finnish websites including Veikkaus, MTV Katsomo, and Elisa experienced slowdowns or complete outages. Mobile connectivity problems have also been reported in Puumala this summer, with residents experiencing frequent call quality issues and dropped connections.
Meanwhile, VR’s online store and app were reported non-functional for an entire day on July 16, according to user reports.
Passenger frustration
For travellers already navigating Finland’s peak summer tourist season, the app failures have added significant inconvenience. With international air travel to Finland projected to grow 13 per cent compared to last summer, the disruptions have hit at a particularly challenging time for visitors unfamiliar with alternative ticketing options.
Transport authorities have advised passengers to use cash, contactless card payments at ticket machines, or purchase tickets directly from drivers where available. Most services have now been restored, but the incident has raised questions about the resilience of Finland’s increasingly digital-dependent public transport infrastructure.
