Alisa Vainio Wins European Marathon Title

Finland’s Alisa Vainio won the women’s marathon at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Sunday. She finished almost five minutes ahead of her closest competitor and set a new championship record with a time of 2:22:26.
The 28-year-old runner took the lead from the very start and ran most of the race alone. She finished 4 minutes and 55 seconds before Hungary’s Lili Anna Vindics-Tóth, who took the silver medal with 2:27:21. Britain’s Abbie Donnelly won bronze with 2:27:33, finishing 5 minutes and 7 seconds behind Vainio.
A Record-Breaking Win
This victory was the largest margin ever recorded in the women’s marathon at the European Championships. The old record was held by Portugal’s Rosa Mota, who won by 4 minutes and 14 seconds. Vainio also broke the championship record by almost three minutes. The previous record was 2:25:20.
The race took place on a difficult course in Birmingham with hills, turns, and repeated five-kilometre laps through the city centre. But Vainio made it look easy. She broke away from the other runners within the first kilometre and kept running at her own pace. Her lead grew as the race went on:
· At 20 kilometres, she led by about three minutes.
· At 25 kilometres, her lead was three and a half minutes.
· By 30 kilometres, it was over four minutes.
She passed 35 kilometres in 1:57:37 and reached 40 kilometres in 2:14:49 before finishing without any late challenge.
What She Said
After the race, Vainio told Yle that she had planned to start at a comfortable pace. “When nobody came with me, I thought I would just keep running relaxed,” she said. She added that the result had not yet sunk in and thanked her family and coach for their support. “This ranks quite high among the marathons I have run,” she told Yle. “There has been a lot of work behind this.”
A Historic Moment for Finland
Vainio’s victory gave Finland its first-ever European title in the women’s marathon. The European Athletics Championships will end in Birmingham on Sunday evening.
