2025 was Finland’s second warmest year on record

September 2025 was the warmest on record for the third consecutive year. Station-level data showed that in most parts of the country, annual average temperatures ranked as the second highest ever measured at those locations. In southern archipelago areas, yearly averages reached up to +8°C, while in north-western Lapland, they hovered close to 0°C. The highest temperature of the year was 32.6°C, recorded on 31 July at Oulu Airport. The lowest was -39.6°C, measured on 4 February in Savukoski at the Tulppio observation station. Rainfall in 2025 varied significantly by region. While much of western and northern Finland received average or above-average precipitation, eastern and central areas recorded drier-than-normal conditions. Some locations reported exceptionally low annual rainfall, which had a visible impact on regional water systems. In eastern Finland, below-average rainfall contributed to unusually low water levels in the Saimaa lake system. Viitasaari’s Haapaniemi station registered the lowest total rainfall for the year, with 445 mm. By contrast, the highest total annual rainfall was recorded at Puolanka’s Paljakka station in Kainuu, with 835.1 mm. The highest single-day rainfall was 86 mm, measured at Ruokolahti’s Kotaniemi station on 18 June. December followed the warming trend. Monthly average temperatures ranged from +5°C in the south-western archipelago to -11°C in northern Lapland. Most of the country saw average temperatures 3–5°C above the seasonal norm. In Lapland, the deviation was about half a degree. The highest temperature in December, 8.9°C, was measured at Mariehamn Airport on 10 December. The lowest, -35.3°C, was recorded in Kilpisjärvi on New Year’s Eve.
